Have interviewed thousands in my career, and I usually know my decision in the first 10 minutes. How? I’m looking for four specific qualities: Attitude, the ability to think on your feet, creativity, and charisma.

While all of the qualities that I’ve mentioned above are important, there’s one that trumps them all: attitude.

Many employers – not only law firms are willing to train someone with the right attitude than put up with a skilled individual with a bad attitude. After all, skills can be taught, but attitude is something that’s harder to change.

Your attitude is what will make or break your law firm interview. If you come across as arrogant or entitled, you’re not going to get very far. On the other hand, if you show humility and a willingness to learn, you’ll be much more likely to impress your potential employer.

Remember, it’s not just about having the right skills or qualifications. It’s also about having the right attitude. So if you want to stand out in a law firm interview, make sure you keep that in mind.

People will see you before they listen to you. People, myself included will have decided whether they are going to listen to anything you say within ten seconds that is literally before you say a word. The first impression is the only impression – really second chances start and end in the church.

One of the best ways to make a good first impression is to dress the part. This means wearing a suit or professional clothing that reflects the culture of the law firm you’re applying to.

For example, if you’re interviewing at a more traditional law firm, you’ll want to dress conservatively. This means avoiding anything too flashy or trendy. On the other hand, if you’re interviewing at a more modern firm, you can be a bit more creative with your wardrobe.

Just remember to avoid anything too revealing or inappropriate. After all, you want your potential employer to focus on your qualifications, not your fashion sense.

Master the Art of Telling Story

The best way to be memorable is to be interesting, and there’s no better way to be interesting than to be a good storyteller.

Humans are hardwired for stories. It’s how we’ve always communicated, and it’s how we make sense of the world around us. When you tell a story in an interview, it helps your potential employer connect with you on a personal level.

It also shows that you have the ability to communicate effectively, which is an essential skill for any lawyer. So next time you’re asked a question in an interview, take a few moments to formulate a response that tells a story.

Investigate Your Employer

There are a few ways you can do this.

  • Second, take some time to familiarize yourself with their website and any other materials they may have sent you. This way, you’ll be able to ask informed questions and engage in meaningful conversation during the interview.
  • And finally, try to connect with someone who works at the firm. This could be a friend, family member, or even a former colleague.

They’ll be able to give you insights into what it’s really like to work there, which will help you decide if it’s the right fit for you. This should in no way be confused with canvassing or being a suck-up. You want to be able to show that you get them as a business, and part of that is having done your research.

This shows that you’ve taken the initiative to learn more about the firm and that you’re truly interested in working there. It will also give you a leg up on the competition, as most candidates won’t have taken the time to do this.

In addition, your responses will come out as informed and aligned to the company’s culture, rather than just the same ole’ “I have good people skills, I’m a fast learner, and I’m excited to work with you!” You want to show that you understand what it is they do and that you can see yourself as part of their team. This will go a long way in making a good impression.

Know How to Answer the Final Question

Every interview ends the same way… “Tell me why you’re the best candidate for this position” THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT QUESTION OF THE INTERVIEW Here’s how you ace it, every time:

It’s all about your UNIQUENESS. All candidates say they are: – Driven – Hard-working – Team players These are boring and NOT unique. Share EXACTLY what it is that makes you: – Unique – Different – LEGENDARY This answer should become second nature. You should be so comfortable with it that you could say it in your sleep.

The reason this question is so important is that it’s your last chance to make a good impression. The interviewer has already formed an opinion of you by this point, and this is your opportunity to change their mind.

If you can effectively communicate what makes you unique and why you’re the best candidate for the job, you’ll increase your chances of getting an offer. So take some time to think about your answer to this question before the interview, and make sure you practice it until you have it down perfectly.

Ask KILLER Questions At the End of the Interview

At the end of the interview, you’ll usually be given an opportunity to ask your own questions. This is your chance to show that you’re truly interested in the position and the firm.

To make the most of this opportunity, you should prepare a few questions in advance. These should be thoughtful, insightful questions that demonstrate your knowledge of the firm and your interest in working there.

Avoid asking generic questions about things like vacation days or benefits. Not only are these things that you can easily look up on your own, but they also make it seem like you’re not really interested in the job itself.

Instead, try to ask specific questions about the work you’ll be doing or the team you’ll be working with. This will show that you’re truly interested in the role and that you have the potential to be a great asset to the team.

By asking killer questions, you’ll not only impress the interviewer but also get valuable information that will help you decide if this is the right job for you.

For instance, you can ask these three killer questions:

  • What’s the biggest challenge facing the team today?
  • What does greatness look like in this role?
  • What has your career looked like at this company?

The last one gets them to talk about themselves, which ironically makes them remember you.

Communicate Your Passions When Talking About Why You Want the Job

When you’re asked why you want the job, it’s important to be honest and share your genuine motivations. However, avoid simply saying that you need a job or that you’re looking for a change.

Instead, take this opportunity to communicate your passions and explain what it is about the role that truly excites you. This will show the interviewer that you have a clear understanding of the position and that you’re genuinely interested in working there.

For instance, if you’re passionate about environmental law, tell the interviewer how excited you are to work with a firm that specializes in this area. Or if you love working with people, explain how much satisfaction you get from helping others resolve their legal problems.

Don’t be like everyone else. Everybody wants: – More money – Promotions – Opportunities You blend in by saying you want to grow your career. You should instead tell them your PASSIONS. Managers love candidates who know what they are passionate about. So tell them how this position aligns with your passions and how you will gain fulfilment in the position. This sends the message that you will work hard because you’ll love what you’re doing.

Be Genuine – Don’t Lie!

One of the most important things you can do in an interview is to be genuine. Don’t try to act like someone you’re not, and don’t lie about your qualifications or experience.

The interviewer will be able to tell if you’re being genuine, and it will reflect poorly on you if they catch you in a lie. It’s much better to simply be yourself and let the interviewer get to know the real you.

If you’re not sure how to answer a question, take a moment to think about it before responding. It’s better to take a few extra seconds to gather your thoughts than to say something that isn’t true.

By being genuine, you’ll build rapport with the interviewer and increase your chances of impressing them. So don’t be afraid to let your personality shine through in the interview!

Send a Thank You Note!

After your interview, be sure to send a thank-you note to the interviewer. This is a small but important gesture that shows your appreciation for their time and helps you stay fresh in their mind.

In your thank-you note, reiterate your interest in the position and restate why you would be the perfect candidate for the job. You can also use this opportunity to address any concerns the interviewer may have expressed during the interview.

Sending a thank-you note is a simple way to stand out from other candidates and show that you’re truly interested in the role. So don’t forget to do it!

  • Dress inappropriately: This sends the wrong message about your level of interest and seriousness.
  • Forget to bring copies of your resume or references: The interviewer will want to have this information on hand, so be prepared to provide it.
  • Ask irrelevant or personal questions: These types of questions will not endear you to the interviewer and may even turn them off from considering you for the position.
  • Fail to send a thank-you note: This is just good manners and shows that you appreciate the time the interviewer took to meet with you.
